Operation In Hole In The Road. 38-year old demolition worker, Reginald Graham, of High Heaton, was digging in a 10-feet deep foundation trench in Westmoreland-road, Newcastle-on-Tyne yesterday, when the basement wall of a demolished house caved in, and a ton of masonry crashed down, trapping him by his left leg. For more than an hour workmates tried to fee him - with the aid of a giant crane. Doctors on the spot conferred - then told Mr. Graham: "We must amputate". Three nurses, two doctors and surgeon, Mr. Ivor Frew wont down into the up to the knee so that he could be lifted clear. Photo Shows: The operation is over.. and the surgeon, sleeves rolled up, helps to lift Reginald Graham out of the trench.
