Portrait of Ambassador Nikolai Trofimovich Fedorenko, the new permanent Representative of the Soviet Union to the United Nations, who presented his credentials to Secretary - General Uthant this ~~~~~~. He succeed Ambassador Valerian A. Zorin, who has returned to the USSR. Mr. Fedorenko, who has been in his country's diplomatic service since 1939, was Ambassador to Japan from 1958 to 1962, and Deputy Foreign Minister of the USSR from 1955 to 1958. From 1952 to 1955 he headed the Far Eastern Department of the Foreign Ministry. While in the diplomatic service, Mr. Frdorenko carried on scientific work in Eastern literature. He is Doctor of Philology and professor of the history of Chinese literature. In 1956, he was elected Correspond (Associate) Member of the USSR Academy of science. Mr Fedorenko was born in Piatigorsk on 9 November 1912. He completed his postgraduate course there. He is married and has three children.
