Baby elephant born in Switzerland: In our kind of latitude the birth of an elephant is a pretty rare occurrence. So it was with considerable joy that they noticed at the kniecireus - that the elephant java was about to produces her second offspring - which happended to be the second birth of an elephant in Switzerland. The first birth, on November 15th, 1963, almost cost her her life. after 656 days she had given birth to a 278 lbs. baby. It had been necessary to surround the mother with every care and attention during the months prior to this difficult birth and to call on specialist intervention. This time however, the birth did not require any human intervention and and 18-year old mother elephant gave the owners to be transferred to the Bvincennes zoo in Paris because he showed signs of becoming dangerous. photo shows Baby elephant Siam, pictured with its mother at the winter quarters of the knie circus.
