A Favorite ....of Dr. Wolfgang Gewalt, director of the Duisburg zoo, is this Wombat. The animal, half a meter long - half pig - half bear - belongs to the very rare ones among "zoo inhabitants". There are only six wombats in the federal Republic of Germany, two of them in the burg zoo.Originally the Wombat comes from Australia. He costs between 1000 -- and 1500 DM and is very hard to get, though rather hated as parasite in his home country. Sometimes the animal goes on a dog's lead - it there fore is not very surprising that Dr. Gewalt (photo) is especially fond of the Wombat.
