Description
SIR THOMAS DUGDALE RESIGNS GIVES UP POST TO AVERT GOVERNMENT DEFEAT... SIR THOMAS DUGDALE announced his resignation yesterday in the House of Commons-from the post of Minister of Agriculture to avert the defeat of the Government when it was learned that about 40 Tory back-benchers were prepared not to vote if the Opposition challenged the Government following the storm over Chichel Down-the land that was requisitioned as a bombing range by the Air Ministry during the wars and after the Ministry of Agriculture instead of being offered bad to the original owner (Mrs. Mary Marten) who inherited it from her father Lord Alington... KEYSTONE PHOTO SHOWS: LIEUT COMMANDER and MRS. GEORGE MARTEN -with their daughters VICTORIA GEORGINA and CHARLOTTE...The Crichel Down land belonged to Mrs. Marten-and it was Lieut. Commander Marten's insistence that brought about the inquiry which ended in the resignation of Sir Thomas Dugdale...
