Description
27th May 1980 Archbishop lead pilgrims at Walsingham â 15,000 pilgrims led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Robert Runcie, gathered at Walsingham, Norfolk, yesterday to give thanks for the life of the Virgin Mary. It was the first time in modern history that an Anglican Primate officiated at the ceremony; an outdoor solemn mass was celebrated in the Abbey grounds. Protesters demonstrated against the visit and the Archbishop had to walk past various banners. The Duchess of Kent, who lives nearby at Anmer, sat with other pilgrims and queued to receive communion. Photo Shows: The Archbishop of Canterbury delivers an open-air sermon in the abbey grounds.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
