September 7th 1979 Right Reverend Robert Runcie is to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury â The next Archbishop of Canterbury is the Bishop of St. Albans, the Right Reverend Robert Runcie. It was announced today, the 57 year-old bishop takes over from the present Archbishop Dr. Ronald Coggan, who at 70, announced at eh would retire next January. Bishop Runcie, was awarded the Military Medal during the Second World War for rescuing a tank crew after it had been hit a caught alight. He has been at St. Albans since 1970.
