Thirty-Ninth Regular Session of the General Assembly: United Nations, New York, 24 September, 1984: The United Nations General Assembly, which commenced its 39th Regular Session on the afternoon of 18 September, elected as its President Paul J.F Lusaka, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the UN. As proclaimed by the Assembly 1981, the International Day of Peace was observed on the opening day of teh new Session. The United Nations nmow has 159 Member States. Six other States and thirteen organization have Observer status. Photo shows The delegations of the United States attending the General Assembly today.
