Sir Alexander Fleming Receives Gift To Celebrate 25th. Anniversary Of Penicillin Discovery: Sir Alexander Fleming F.R.S., Professor of Bacteriology at St. Mary's Hospital, London-who discovered penicillin-the most important healing agent to date-in 1929-was today presented with two George III Sauce Bowls from the EArl of Verulam-by the Duke Of Edinburgh-to mark the 25th. anniversary of his great discovery. The ceremony was held at St. Mary's Hospital-where penicillin was discovered in 1929-although it was not until Sir Howard Florey separated the drug now used for treatment from the original penicillin during the war, that its full value was appreciated. Sir Alexander Fleming received the nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945 jointly with Sir H. Florey and Dr. E.B. Chain.Photo shows. The Duke Of Edinburgh presents the sauce bowls to Sir Alexander Fleming-during the anniversary ceremonies at St. Mary's Hospital, this morning.
