GENERAL ASSEMBLY DEBATES AFRICA'S ECONOMIC CRISIS: The General Assembly began on, 27 May a special session on the critical economic situation in Africa to recommend national and international action for medium- and long-term development of the African continent. In an opening statement the UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar said that in calling for the session African countries had shown their conviction that the UN system was an effective forum "for sensitizing and mobilizing the international community". Seen in this photo are (l to r) Vernon Walters, Permanent Representative to the UN from the United States of America, Jaime de Pinies (Spain), President of the special session of the General Assembly; Abdou Dicuf, President of Senegal and Current Chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), who came to UN Headquarters to open the General Assembly Special session, and UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar.
