Contamination Of Oranges! No Cause For Alarm Say Medical And Scientific Experts: A Press conference was held today at the London Press Centre by the national Federation of Fruit and Potato Trades. Leading figures in the medical and scientific world have expressed their concern at the unfortunate public reaction following the discovery of small amounts of metallic mercury in a few imported oranges. The public appear to have overlooked the fact that the Department of Health and Social Security was prompt in issuing a statement saying that "Consumption of small quantities of metallic mercury does not constitute a significant health hazard. Accordingly it is not felt necessary to advise against the purchase of oranges. It was pointed out that most of the reported incidents have been in any case hoaxes or flase alarms - and that only a few oranges out of hundreds of millions have been found to have been tampered with. Photo shows Mr. Alick Glass, Vice-Chairman of the Federation's Importers Standing Committee tucks into an orange - after speaking at the Press Conference today.
