World's First Energy-Saving Sailing Ship: The world's firs t commercial energy-saving sailing ship, the Shinaitoku Maru, was launched in Japan on August 1st. The revolutionary Japanese vessel, which docked in Tokyo recently, has two sails to supplement the main engine and utilize the exhaust gases, microputer controls, controllable pitch propellers and other energy-saving devices to reduce her fuel consumption to half that of a conventional carrier of the same size. Her sails are controlled by a microcomputer and require no extra crew-compared with a conventional vessel. Japanese shipbuilders believe they have made a breakthrough which points the way to future ship design. Photo shows The nerve centre of the ship, controlling the main engine and the sail system.
