Duke of Edinburgh lays the Keel of Britain's first Atomic Submarine: H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh performed the ceremony of laying the keel of Britain's first Atomic Submarine at the Barrow in Furness yards of Vickers Asmstrong. The craft is the "Dreadnought".. The Duke performed the ceremony by switching on a gamma ray housed in a protective leaden box - which in turn starts the winch to draw the first 30 ft. circular section of the submarine on to the slipway. The Dreadnought will be a super craft capable of seeking out enemy craft at more than 30 knots. She is of 2,000 tons.. Photo shows General view as the Duke of Edinburgh sets the 30 ft. circular section of the craft on to the slipway - at Barrow-in-Furness.
