Restoring "Portrait of a man on Horseback" Purchased by National Gallery for undisclosed Sum.: Mr. A.W. Lucas - the Chief restorer - and members of his staff - are now busily at work restoring the Remb~andt "Portrait of a Man on Horseback" - purchased from Lady Salmond for an undisclosed sum by the National Gallery. The Treasury has granted a sum of £128,000 towards the total. Actual value of the painting has been placed at about £500,000 - although total paid by the Gallery is believed to have been less than £300,000 - including an excemption from death duties. This Rembrandt is believed to be the greatest to go the National Gallery. Photo shows Mr. L . Howard (Chief Craftsman) removing the protective tissue from the painting at the Gallery. The tissue was placed onto the painting face for protection during the process of 'restretching' 'relining" - and ironing . This process is to be followed by the cleaning .The painting measures 10 x 8.
