Restoring "Portrait of a man on Horseback " Purchased by National Gallery for Undisclosed Sum.: Mr. A.W. Lucas - the Chief restorer - and members of his staff - are now busily at work restoring the Rembrandt "Portrait of a Man oh Horseback" - purchased from Lady Salmond for an undisclosed sum by the National gallery . The Treasury has granted a sum of £128,000 towards the total. Actual value of the painting has been placed at about £500,000 - although total paid by the Gallery is believed to have a been less than £300,000 - including an excemption from death duties. This Rembrandt is believed to be the greatest to go to the National Gallery. The painting measures 10 ft. by 8 ft. Photo shows Mr. L. Howard (Chief Craftsman) - at work removing the protective tissue from the face of the painting at the Gallery . The tissue was place on to the face of the painting for protection during the 'restretching" - 'relining and 'ironing'. This This process is to be followed by the cleaning.
