Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Missile meter becomes Earthquake Warner: Scientists in California are now using a small missile, 1-inch diameter guidance control meter to detect earthquake movement. Called a Tiltmeter, the sensitive device works on the simple principle of a spirit level. The Tiltmeter will detect earth movement many hours before an earthquake or volcanic eruption occurs and such a warning system is considered invaluable to public safety. Photo shows Scientist Craig Kirkpatrick places a probe stick containing tiny Tiltmeter 5 feet into the South California earthquake fault area. Inset is a close-up of the sensitive 1-inch Tiltmeter device.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.

Photo is dated --0000.
