VIC, THE COUNCIL WORKMAN INHERITS AN EARLDOM: After spending the day shovelling snow for Southend Council Vic Hampden fulln name Vere Frederick Cecil Hobart-Hampden put his feet up with the paper and learned that he had inherited an earldom from the eightth Earl who died in hospital yesterday. After being packed off to Australia in 1919 with £50 in his pocket Vic worked as a sheep farmer before returning to the United Kingdom in 1949. His last job had been with the Southend town council from whom he drew £10 in wages.
