Thirty-Ninth Regular Session of The General Assembly The United Nations General Assembly, which commenced its 38th Regular Session on the afternoon of 18 September, elected as its President Paul J.F. Zusaka, Permanent Representative of Zambia to the UN. As proclaimed by the Assembly in 1981, the International Day of Peace was observed on the opening day of the new session. The United Nations now has 159 Member States. Six other States and thirteen organizations have Observer status. Alhaji Lamin Kiti Jabang, Minister for External Affairs of the Gambia, seated with the other members of his country's delegation prior to addressing the Assembly on 11 October.
