World Record Prize For Painting. A Velasquez Fetches 2,200,000 Guineas. At Christie's in London, the attention of the international art world was focussed on the Velasquez portrait of Juan de Pareja, the artist's mulatto assistant in 1650. The painting, which was offered for sale by the Earl of Radnor to help pay estate duty, was sold for the world record prize of 2,200,000 guineas. It was bought jointly by Mr. Louis Goldenburg and Mr. Alex Wildenstein, of New York. It is not the first time the portrait has passed through Christie's rooms. In 1801 it was sold by James Christie, the founder, on behalf of Sir William Hamilton, the husband of Nelson's mistress for 39 gns.
