The reason is that Joan assists her husband in a daring cabaret act in which He smashes a 14-pound sledgehammer down on a half-hundred weight paving stone shattering it while it is balanced on the head of his wife. ''Nothing to it'' said the hard-headed housewife from Watford, who has been married to Fred for 24 years and have 14 children. Now their part-time cabaret act has brought them success - they have won a spot on a television show called ''Opportunity Knocks''.
