Teachers' Strike In Birmingham. More than 180,000 children are affected by the teachers' strike which started in Birmingham yesterday. Only five of the town's 500 schools will be operating normally. At least 100,000 children will receive no schooling during the dispute. The rest will attend on a part-time basis. All 4,800 members of the teachers' union in Birmingham have been called out. They say they are prepared to stay out for at least three months. The library had 100 applications for membership from pupils who heeded parents' and teachers' advice to continue their education in public libraries.
