Description
The F-111 Swing-Wing Tactical Fighter On Show At Wethersfield. The F-111 swing-wing tactical fighter was shown at R.A.F. Station, Wethersfield, for the first time in the U.K. after a non-stop crossing of the Atlantic without refuelling. The U.S. Air Force jet fighter had arrived here following a 3300-mile crossing from Loring Air Force base, Maine, which lasted five hours and thirty-five minutes. It's long-range capacity was helped during the crossing by extending the wings to take-off-and landing position and flying at only 550 miles an hour, instead of at its top speed of two-and-a half times the speed of sound in its swept-back arrowhead shape. Keystone Photo Shows:- View of the F-111 from the rear, showing its two jet housings.

Photo measures 10 x 8 inches.

Photo is dated 5-25-1967.
