Faster than sound plane kills 27 in air show disaster D.H. 110 explode and crashes â Death come hurtling out of the sky yesterday to 25 spectators at the Fernborough Air Display and about 65 others of the 120,000 spectators who witnessed the supersonic tragedy are injured. Dead too, are 30 year old test pilot John Derry, the first British flier to exceed the speed of sound, and his observer Tony Richards. The D.H. 110 disintegrated in mid-air when traveling at about 700 mph and part crashed down on to the watching crowd. Keystone Photo Shows: The scene at Fernborough as casualties are loaded into ambulances, after the air disaster in which 27 lost their lives.
