Gas Turbine Helicopter to Join Air Force : Next year the Bristol 192 twin - engined tandem-rotor gas turbine helicopter will enter service with Britain's Royal Air Force. 54 ft. 4 ins. in overall length, Europe's largest, it has been designed to meet military requirements in troop and freight transport, search and rescue operations and ambulance and supply-dropping work, On short hauls it can carry 25 men. Its freight capacity is a maximum concentrated load of 4,000 lbs. or a distributed one of 6,000 lbs. A synchronizing shaft inter-connects the two Napier gazelle engines, keeping the rotors in proper phase relationship and permitting both of them to operate on one engine in an emergency. Picture shows The Bristol type 192 in its R.A.F. colors.
