Essex Scientists study maize-growing; Dr. Neil Baker and Dr. Steve Long of Essex University's biology department have recieved a £16,000 grant from the Agricultural Research Council to study the problems to growing maize in Britain. They have designed special equipment which will enable them to look inside the plant while it is growing, simulate sunlight and observe the effects of cold on the plant. Cold is a particular problem in Britain, reducing the crap yield to an uneconomic level. Leaf samples killed by a cold shock will be sent to the University of Leeds for analysis. In the later stages of its three year length the project will also study varieties of maize grown in high altitude regions of others parts of the world.
