World's Biggest Racing Catamaran Launched.: The launching took place today at Brightlingsea. Essex, of the world's biggest racing catamaran "British Oxygen". She will contest the 1974 Round - Britain Race in the hands of Gerry Boxall and Robin Knox-Johnson, and is scheduled for the 1976 Single-Handed Transatlantic Race. The 70ft overall, 32ft. beam craft, has been designed by Rod Macalpine-Downie, and is the first centure to be backed by British Challengers, an association of major firms and individuals formed to support British international sporting effort. She will carry more than 2000 sq.ft.of plain sail.
