Description
These Fishermen Could Be High And Dry... Southend anglers are facing a new peril of the deep - Maplin. For, when dredging begins for the air and sea ports begins, the men may lose their livelihood, threatening the rich fishing grounds which supply up to 60 per cent of the fleet's annual catch. At most there are about 45 trawlers and their crews and fighting huge odds to get help for their case. The fishermen have been told that dredging could take up to eight years and that would be near the Barrow Deep - right in the heart of the 100 square mile fishing area. The effect could be disastrous. The fishermen are faced with just two choices; either pack up their homes and move - or simply pack up their fishing. The end of the day - and the fishing boats head for their home base, Southend.
