NAOMI UEMURA OF JAPAN WINS VALOUR IN SPORT AWARD. The annual Valour in Sport Award (known as the V.C. of sport) was won by NAOMI UEMURA of Japan, aged 37, who became the first man to reach the North Pole alone, across the frozen Artic Sea. During his career Uemura has conquered Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Mt McKinley, Everest and many other summits. Each feat was accomplished alone. The ceremony took place in the Guildhall in the City of London. PHOTO SHOWS: NAOMI UEMURA seen wearing his Valour Award with TEDDY KENNEDY, the son of Edward Kennedy, who was one of the finalists for the award-he lost a leg through cancer a few years ago.
