Digging For The "Barkstead Treasure" - At The Tower. Digging began at the Tower of London this morning in the search for the "Barkstead Treasure" reputed to have been hidden there in the 17th, century. Excavations are taking place in the Bell Tower and the space below the boiler room of the Governor's residence. The treasure - estimated at between ~7,000 and ~40,000 - was thought to have been secreted by Sir John Barkstead who was Governor of the Tower during ~~~~~~ ~~~~ he was later himself executed (1662).. Many previous attempts have been made to find the treasure.. The ministry of works is in charge of the present search..
