12-8-58 Britain welcomes the Nautilus as she arrives in Portland Harbour â The United Statesâ nuclear-powered submarine Nautilus arrived at Portland Harbour this afternoon, at the end of her voyage which took her under the North Pole. Thousands of holiday-makers gave a great cheer and shipsâ sirens sounded a welcome as the submarine approached the harbour. Photo Shows: Commander William Robert Anderson, Commanding Officer of the Nautilus gets a clap as he comes ashore from the submarine on arrival in Portland Harbour today.
