Salvage Work Begins on the East German Cargo Ship Magdeburg Broadness point near Gravesend The crew of an East German tug have begun work salvaging the Magdeburg, the 6,629 ton East German cargo vessel which has been lying on her side since October 27th, when she was in collision in the Thames with a Japanese cargo ship in dense fog. The Magdeburg was carrying a cargo of buses, worth $330,000 which were bound for Cuba. Photo Shows: Members of the crew of the East German vessel Polar standing on the upturned hull of the crippled Magdeburg during salvage operations at Broadness Point, near Gravesend today. One of the buses can be seen strapped to the deck.
