Photo shows The Observatory with Mount Yari and Mount Hodaka, part of the Japan Alps,
Up In The Clouds: A job away from the crowds of Tokyo can even become lonesome work at the Tokyo University Observatory on the summit of the 3,000 meter extinct volcano, Mount Norikura in the Japan Alps. A small group of people, numbering 4 or 5 spend 20 days at a time transmitting data to the university and caring for and maintaining the highly sophisticated and delicate equipment used by the university in its study of the composition of the sun. In summer there are always a few visitors but in winter surrounded by ice and snow the only way to get there is to ski.
