Ancient Japanese Burial site â An ancient burial site, known as âœThe 100 Holes of Yoshimiâ, some 60 kms from Tokyo, is becoming a âmustâ for visiting scholars of ancient history from overseas. The unique caves excavated by Professor Masagoro Tsuboi of Tokyo University. In 1888, date from the 7th century. Each cave is the tomb of a high ranking person, his family and servants, and comprises three caverns for the dead, and a ceremonial hall. Ancient writings are etched on the walls of the caverns, dug in the living rock. A large entrance at the side of the âbeehiveâ shaped hill leads to the 219 caves connected by corridors in a labyrinth system.
