Europeâs expanding ports turn to land reclamation â The French, Dutch and Belgians are racing each other for the lionâs share of Europeâs lucrative shipping trade. At Marseilles, Dunkirk, Rotterdam and Antwerp, vast land reclamation schemes are in progress to provide land for improved amenities and adjacent industrial development. The aim: to treble present capacity within 10 years. Britainâs plans for much smaller projects are still under discussion. Photo Shows: At Rotterdam, already the worldâs biggest port, shells of factories and chemical plants dot thousands of acres of reclaimed land. Sites still under water have been booked.
