Inauguration of World's Fifth Largest Bridge.
The inauguration took place of the President Costa E Silva bridge - the world's fifth largest which links Rio de Janeiro with Niteroi across Guanabara's Bay, and on which English technicians worked. The Queen and Prince Philip were present in November 1968 when the contract was signed to build the bridge. It took five years to construct and was the largest engineering project in the world. It is 15 kilometres long, 8 of which are over the sea. It is 27 metres wide and 60 metres above sea level. 10,000 workers were employed, and work went on 24 hours a day.
