Description
Tokyo's 'Versailles Palace'' prepared for Pompidou's April visit.: The detached palace in Akasaka, Tokyo the former residence of Emperor Taisho of Japan (1912-1928), which has just been remodelled after five years work costing £15 million to serve as an official guest house for State visitors, stood ready to receive its first dignitary president Pompidou in April, but due to his state of health his visit to Japan was cancelled. Unless another head of state visits Japan during 1974, it is likely the first guest to occupy the palace will be Queen Elizabeth 11 in 1975. The building is often called ''Tokyo's Versailles'', since the architects introduced features very similar to the palace in France, but they also copied parts of the Louvre in Paris, and parts of Buckingham Palace in London. The last use made of the Detached Palace was as offices for the planning of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. At that time the interior of the building was dark and dreary and in need of repair. The Duke of Connaught stayed at the palace in 1918, and Edward Prince of Wales in 1922. Photo shows the remodelled palace in Tokyo during the Press preview on April 3,1974. The exterior of the palace, a little o Versailles, the Louvre and Bucking Palace in design, was built in 1906.
