Africa's women march to the Polls: Acara, capital of the Golad Coast with an estimated population of 150,000. recently elected a new Municipal Council. Women were predominent at the 23 polling booths from which the returns showed the city was to be governed by an all-African council for the next three years. It was another example of how the Gold Coast, with the cooperation of the British Government, is moving toward self-government in a democratic manner. Photo shows top left: Women voters line up outside the Accra Municipal Court to vote. Miss Betty Smith, a dressmaker, is second from left. Top right: Betty has her name checked against the electoral roll. Bottom left: She is handed her votting slip. Bottom right: Before registering her vote in secret, Betty has her left thumb marked with indelible ink, a precaution to insure no one voted more than once.
