SHY COUPLES AVOID FACING SEATS.
A row of park benches remain unoccupied, as Japanese couples reveal their reluctance, or shyness, at being watched by couples facing them. It is characteristic of the Japanese not to display their emotions in public. With elderly couples, the wife still walks a pace or so behind her husband, while the present day younger couples walk side-by-side, however they never link arms, and rarely hold hands, while kissing in public is still considered scandalous. This scene was taken in Hibiya Park, in the central area of Tokyo.
