Ancient castle goes up in smoke. Blown up by 500 LBS. of explosives: The 150 year old Rossie Castle, near Montross was recently demolished by Army Engineers - with the aid of 500 lb. of plastic explosive. Within 30 seconds the castle - which was sold to a professional footballer 20 years ago for £1 - was reduced to 20,000 tons of rubble which will be used by the local council for road widening scheme.. For weeks 80 officers and men of 117 Field Engineering Regiment had been boring holes in the 3ft. 6in. thick walls.The charge was set off by the present owner of the castle Mr. George Ogilvie. Photo shows the ruins of the castle - before the setting off of the explosive charges - near Montrose.
