A supersize ship like the ''Yakumosan maru'', which transited recently. Shows how little clearance exists between the walls of the lock chambers and the sides of one of today's newer commercial ships. In addition to the to the width or beam, the draft of ships of this type is so great that they cannot transit fully laden throughout the year and all require special handling to make to ocean-to-ocean transit.
