Tight fit for a ship in Panama canal Lock: Panama City, Panama: The Panama Canal is 81 km long and 12.5 m deep. When is was inaugurated 58 years ago (1914) it seemed oversize for than vessels but today the ships have grown and its often a tight fit for the steamers passing through the locks of this important waterway.
