An Intelligentsia In The Making: A New University In The Central Caucusus: Kabarding In The Central Caucusus Has A Population Of 3/4 Million. Up Till 1917, It Had A Literacy Figure Of 2% and no Written Language Of Its Own. By 1937, It Had A Complete Adult Literacy. In September 1958, A New University was established at Nalchik. It Is A Large And Important One For The Country, Having Four Departments: History & Philology, Physics And Mathematics, Building And Engineering, And Agriculture. Students Of Nine Nationalities - Kabardians, Balkars, Circassians, Georgians And Ukranians Among Them - Flock To The University Which Has 3,000 Undergraduates Up To Date. Like Any Other University, Kabarding Has An Atmosphere Of Hard Work And Well-Earned Enjoyment. An Arduous Curriculum - Languages Are Taught With The Help Of Tape Recorders And Photographs - And Healthy Entertainment: There Is Even A Jazz Band! But As A New University, Kabarding Undergraduates Will Have The Satisfaction Of Knowing That They Are The Clay In The Moulding Of A New Intellegentsia.
