Description
Bangkok's Palace of a Thousand secrets Foreign Home of Thai's Kings is still "Forbidden": Although the present enlightened Thai Monarch, Phumiphol Adulej, and his family live in a more modest palace, the Grand Palace, dominating the capital, is still known as the " place of a thousand secrets" because so few people of the outside world are ever granted permission to see within its double walls. Home of the Chakri dynasty, first writen about by the Engkish teacher of King Monkhut (Anna and the King of Siam), the palace today is se~~m used except for housing a few ladies c~~~~ to the court. These live in in the former wives, concubines and slaves quarters, and are still guarded day and night. Only on rare occasions are foreigners allowed within, and they have to obey strict dress rules such as ties for the men and proper dresses for the women. These were made after Americans were seen in holiday attire. Within the walls of the hu~e palace are the shrines of past sovereigns and the chamber in which the Kings have been crowned. There are wide avenues linking the various pavilions and temples, well- kept gardens and much of which little or nothing is known - hence the title of the palace. These pictures permitted and when a camera was not rowned on.
