18-1-67 European Orange Peeling Champion meets challengers â Jose Turpin Madrid (Don Pepe), the European Orange Peeling Champion today confronted his first challenger in Britain, at Martinez Spanish Restaurant, London. The challenger was a Spanish waiter from Madrid called Julian Merchan, now resident in London. A surprise challenger from Australia, Mr. Leigh Bottrell, also met Don Pepe today. Don Pepe, a Valencia restaurant owner is offering a ten day holiday in Spain with all expenses paid to anyone beating his orange peeling time. However, the orange must be peeled using only a knife and fork without touching the fruit by hand. The akin and fastest time ever is 12.5 seconds, although he claims 15 seconds as average.
