January 6th 1981 Professor Walters arrives at No. 10 to start work â Professor Alan Walters, 54, the son of Leicestershire labourer, and a leading expert on monetary economics started his new job today as Mrs. Thatcherâs Economics Adviser. For the past four years he has been professor of Political Economy at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, U.S.A. He is to be paid £30,000 a year for an initial two-year secondment. Photo Shows: Professor Alan Walters seen arriving at No. 10 Downing Street this morning to start work in his new job.
