August 27, 1980 Bronx, N.Y. â A family group of Malayan wreathed hornbills at the Bronx Zoo poses for a picture in the World of Birds. That's mother on the leftâher throat pouch is dark blue in color. Next to her is father, with his recognizable yellow throat pouch, and on the right is baby. The chick, only recently emerged from the nest, is already as large as its parents, but lacks the ridged, or wreathed, bill that characterizes the adults. All young hornbills are the spitting image of fatherâ that is, they have yellow throat-markings. If the chick is in fact a female, the throat pouch will gradually darken until it matches the brilliant blue color of its mother. Perhaps these parents know the true sex of their offspring, but visitors to the Bronx Zoo will just have to wait and see.
