1990 Press Photo Alp Baliffs Take Oath In Ceremony In Altdorf

Law and Order on Swiss Alps. An old custom demands that all the Alp-bailiffs of the Canton of Uri swear to keep up law and order among the men who work on the Alps during the summer. For the ritual they all assemble around a table with a crucifix and two burning on it, and promise solemnly on oath to their duty. This year's ceremony took place in the canton's capital of Altdorf, April 30.
