July 7th 1976 David Steel is the new leader of the Liberal Party ' Mr. David Steel was confirmed as the new leader of the Liberal Party. It was calculated that he beat his only rival Mr. John Pardoe, by a ratio of 2-1. Mr. Steel the 38 year old son of a Moderator of the Church of Scotland, is MP for the Scottish border constituency of Roxburgh. He now takes over from Mr. Jo Grimond who was been acting as caretaker.
