1954 Press Photo Gordon Pirie Wins 2 MI Invitation Race And Chris Chataway

Chataway Beats Kuts in 5,000 Meters race at the White City Britain's Chris Chataway last night won a great 5,000 meter race against Vladimir Kuts, the Russian world and European record-holder, in a match between London and Moscow at the White City. He won by little more than a yard, and, to the delight of the 40,000 spectators, he beat the world record by 5 seconds. Britains Gordon Pirie (left) who won the two-mile Invitation race, congratulating Chris Chataway after his great win over Kuts.
