October 9th 1973 Greek Premier pledges early elections as the new government is sworn in - Speaking to the Greek nation on radio and television shortly after the swearing in of his all civilian Cabinet, Mr. Spyros Markezinis, the new Greek Prime Minister, yesterday promised fair parliamentary elections as soon as possible. The 38 Ministers and under-secretaries in the new Cabinet will replace the army-backed government which has ruled the country since the army coup in April 1967.
